Today’s blog continues our ‘Unsung Heroes’ series, focusing on the incredible efforts of those working tirelessly to support Ukraine’s wounded warriors. During his fourth journey to Ukraine, photojournalist Allan Mestel visited a Protez Foundation clinic that manufactures and fits prosthetics for veterans injured during combat. Through Allan’s powerful photographs and reflections, we gain a deeper understanding of the resilience and dedication at this clinic supported by the Protez Foundation and United Help Ukraine’s (UHU) Wounded Warriors Program. This entry explores the tireless work of those providing care and the indomitable spirit of the veterans they help.

United Help Ukraine’s Wounded Warriors Program

The Wounded Warriors Program by United Help Ukraine is committed to providing comprehensive medical care and rehabilitation for service members who have sustained severe injuries in the war. The program encompasses a range of services, including the provision of prosthetics, mental health support, and physical therapy, all aimed at helping injured service members regain their independence and reintegrate into society. United Help Ukraine also collaborates with other non-profits such as the Protez Foundation on this initiative.

A Glimpse of Resilience: Allan Mestel’s Encounter with Ukraine’s Wounded Warriors

Allan Mestel’s visit to the Protez clinic near Kyiv offered a powerful insight into the extraordinary efforts being made to support Ukraine’s wounded warriors. United Help Ukraine’s partnership with the Protez Foundation is vital in providing care to wounded warriors who have lost limbs and require prosthetics. At this Protez clinic, United Help Ukraine has supplied all the necessary equipment, ensuring that the facility is fully equipped to serve those in need. Meanwhile, the Protez Foundation covers the doctors and operational support, focusing on holistic care—from fitting prosthetics through to the patients’ full rehabilitation. This collaboration ensures that those who have sacrificed so much for Ukraine can regain their mobility and rebuild their lives with dignity.

This clinic specializes in manufacturing and fitting prosthetics for veterans, offering them not just new limbs but a renewed sense of hope and purpose. During his time there, Allan observed veterans getting fitted for their prosthetics and rehab sessions to get accustomed to them.

During his visit, Allan was particularly moved by the unwavering positivity and resilience of the individuals he met. Among the many inspiring stories, Allan recalled an encounter with two young veterans seated in the facility’s waiting area. “I was astonished by their upbeat demeanor,” Allan reflected. “These young men were taking everything in stride, even joking around as they tried on each other’s prosthetics.” They found it especially amusing because of their height differences and how the prosthetics fit them. “They were just laughing and having fun. It was remarkable,” Allan commented.

Another poignant moment Allan shared was his interaction with a young man who had been significantly wounded just weeks prior. Despite his recent injuries, the veteran (shown above right) spoke eagerly about his plans to ride an electric scooter—an embodiment of the optimism and forward-looking attitude that seemed to pervade the facility. The veterans were not only welcoming but also enthusiastic about having their photos taken, maintaining a positive attitude despite the challenges they faced.

Allan was also struck by the determination of many veterans who, once fitted with prosthetics, expressed a strong desire to return to their combat units. This resolve and commitment highlight the extraordinary resilience of Ukraine’s defenders, who are eager to continue their service despite their life-changing injuries.

A moving tradition at the facility is the display of unit badges from those who have received treatment there. Veterans donate one of their unit badges to the facility. These badges stand as a powerful symbol of the unity, support, and brotherhood within Ukraine’s military community.

A Helping Hand: Supporting Veterans Through Prosthetic Care

The facility Allan visited is equipped with the machinery essential for the production of high-quality prosthetics and has produced approximately 750 prosthetics and treated around 400 individuals as of this writing.

The facility also offers access to robotic hands manufactured by a pioneering Ukrainian startup company. These robotic hands provide assistive technology for veterans requiring prosthetic limbs. Allan was deeply impressed by the sophistication of these devices, noting that they enable users to perform intricate tasks, such as picking up a pen.

These robotic hands work by connecting an electric lead from the robotic hand to the user’s arm, allowing for movements that closely mimic natural hand functions. This innovative technology not only restores a significant degree of normalcy for the wounded but also symbolizes the resilience and ingenuity of Ukraine in the face of adversity.

Allan also remarked on the facility’s professionalism and cleanliness, describing it as a very clean, high-tech clinic—a testament to the dedication of the staff who maintain such high standards of care.

Unsung Heroes Going Above and Beyond

Beyond the essential medical care and rehabilitation, the many unsung heroes at this facility go above and beyond to support the emotional and social well-being of the patients. Allan met Olga, shown below, a 23-year-old project coordinator. Despite her young age, Olga plays a pivotal role in the facility’s operations. Her dedication and compassion extend beyond her official duties. One of her personal projects was organizing a women’s soccer team for amputees, providing an avenue for physical activity, camaraderie, and emotional support. This initiative not only aids in physical rehabilitation but also helps boost the morale and spirit of the participants.
