What to Expect from the Webinar

Allan Mestel is a photojournalist and passionate visual storyteller driven by a deep commitment to documenting and sharing the stark realities of what is happening in Ukraine. From his very first trip to the region, where he witnessed the mass exodus of people fleeing across the Ukraine-Poland border after the full-scale invasion, to his visits to villages devastated by Russian military attacks, Allan has been on the frontlines capturing the profound impact of the war on the Ukrainian people. His work goes beyond photography; it is a personal mission to bring the world’s attention to the courage, resilience, and hardships faced by those living through this war.

In this webinar, Allan will share his personal observations and thoughts about the Ukrainian people and the impact of the war, offering a unique perspective that only someone who has witnessed these events firsthand can provide. From the ruins of once-thriving communities to the sites where incredible people from organizations like United Help Ukraine are working tirelessly to provide humanitarian assistance, Allan’s journey is one of profound encounters with both the horrors of war and the inspiring efforts to fight back and overcome incredible hardships. Viewers can expect to learn about the harsh realities of war, but at the same time, they will be inspired by Allan’s stories of the resilient and hopeful Ukrainian people who continue to battle to preserve their freedom.

As Allan himself has said, “On every visit to Ukraine, even my last journey after two years of war, the Ukrainian people remain resolute in their conviction to defend their freedom. Somehow, they can still find hope for their future and even moments of joy in their lives. The Ukrainian people are simply incredible.” This spirit of determination and optimism of the Ukrainian people, coupled with a profound sense of duty to share the truth about the destruction of the war and its profound impact on the Ukrainian people, drives Allan to continue his work.

During his four trips to Ukraine since the full-scale invasion, Allan has captured powerful images of Ukraine’s defenders and the selfless volunteers and aid workers who tirelessly support the nation’s fight for freedom. On his most recent journey in May 2024, Allan documented countless individuals from United Help Ukraine, each dedicated to providing critical aid and support. Our current ‘Unsung Heroes’ blog series celebrates these remarkable people, serving as a testament to the incredible stories and faces Allan has brought to light during his time in Ukraine.

This webinar offers an opportunity to hear directly from Allan as he shares the stories behind his most impactful photos and discusses his experiences during his multiple journeys to Ukraine. As a photographer who has worked closely with Spotlight Ukraine, Allan’s images have been instrumental in our mission to keep Ukraine in the spotlight and raise awareness of the ongoing war.
