St. Mary’s Ukrainian Catholic Church, a vibrant cornerstone of the Ukrainian community in North Port, Florida, is once again preparing to host its much-anticipated Easter Bazaar. St. Mary’s welcomes parishioners and visitors to this beloved annual event. This year, the Bazaar will take place on Saturday and Sunday for the first time, offering even more opportunities for attendees to indulge in Ukrainian culture, cuisine, and craftsmanship.

A Celebration of Faith, Tradition, and Community
Southwest Florida, particularly the North Port-Sarasota area, is home to a vibrant and growing Ukrainian community. Permanent Ukrainian residents, seasonal visitors, and immigrants have long contributed to the cultural fabric of the region, forming a close-knit community that cherishes its heritage. St. Mary’s Ukrainian Catholic Church continues to uphold and share this rich Ukrainian cultural legacy through events like the Easter Bazaar.

This annual event has historically drawn 200+ attendees, and with its modified weekend schedule this year, it is expected to attract an even larger crowd. It offers a unique opportunity for both seasoned members of the Ukrainian community and those newly interested in Ukrainian culture to connect, explore, and celebrate Ukraine’s rich cultural heritage. Whether you’re deeply rooted in Ukrainian traditions or simply curious to experience something new, this event promises to be a delightful experience.
The event is led by Rev. Dmytro Kasiyan, Pastor of St. Mary’s, with the support of the Church Council, the Church Sisterhood, and dedicated parishioners—many of whom are also part of local organizations such as the Ukrainian National Women’s League of America (UNWLA,) Ukrainian American Veterans, the Ukrainian American Men’s Social Club, and St. Andrew’s Cultural Center.
A Community Effort That Brings Tradition to Life
Attendees at the Bazaar will not only savor authentic Ukrainian cuisine but also have the opportunity to explore and purchase unique Ukrainian items from a variety of vendors. Guests can also look forward to other highlights, such as a tour of St. Mary’s Church, making this event a true celebration of Ukrainian heritage and community. What makes this event even more special is the tremendous effort behind the scenes.

Many of the baked goods featured in the Bazaar’s “bakery” are lovingly made by women in the community who bake at home. At the same time, other groups of parishioners gather in the church hall’s professional kitchen to prepare food for the event. Shown below are several volunteer parisionhers working in St. Mary’s kitchen to prepare varenyky. Beyond the kitchen, the setup, clean-up, and overall management of the Bazaar are handled by a team of dedicated parishioner volunteers who work tirelessly to ensure the event runs smoothly. Their hard work and commitment contribute to making this event a beloved annual tradition that brings the community together.
Savor Authentic Ukrainian Cuisine: A Taste of What’s on the Menu
One of the Bazaar’s biggest draws is the authentic Ukrainian food. Attendees can enjoy a variety of traditional dishes on-site or opt for takeout to savor these flavors at home. Two of Ukraine’s most beloved and iconic dishes—Borsch and Varenyky (Pierogies)—will be featured at the Bazaar. If you haven’t had the chance to experience these flavorful staples, here’s a closer look at what makes them so special.
Borsch: A flavorful, beet-based Ukrainian soup layered with hearty ingredients such as cabbage, potatoes, carrots, and tender meat, borsch is not only delicious but also a beloved symbol of Ukraine’s culinary heritage. In 2022, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) recognized borsch as part of Ukraine’s Intangible Cultural Heritage in Need of Urgent Safeguarding, affirming its deep cultural significance. This comforting dish is traditionally served warm with a swirl of sour cream, adding a creamy balance to its rich, savory flavors.
Varenyky (Pierogies): A beloved staple of Ukrainian cuisine, varenyky are made from fresh dough that is carefully filled, folded, and pressed into half-moon shapes. They can be filled with a variety of ingredients, including potato, cheese, savory sauerkraut, or even sweet fruits. Traditionally, they are served with a dollop of sour cream for a rich, creamy finish. Known as “varenyky” in Ukraine and often referred to as “pierogies” in North America, the dish gets its name from the Ukrainian word “varyty,” meaning “to boil.” In some regions of Ukraine, they are also affectionately called “pyrohy,” reflecting the diversity of local dialects.
The menu for the Bazaar will also feature a wide range of other traditional Ukrainian dishes:
- Holubtsi (Cabbage Rolls): Tender cabbage leaves filled with seasoned rice, ground meat, and vegetables, then baked in a rich tomato sauce.
- Deruny (Potato Pancakes): Crispy on the outside and soft inside, served with sour cream or applesauce.
- Nalisnyky (Cheese Blintzes): Thin crepes filled with sweetened farmer’s cheese and lightly fried to golden perfection.
- Shashlyk (Shish-Kabobs): Succulent, marinated meat skewers grilled to perfection.
- Kovbasa: Flavorful, smoked Ukrainian sausage that pairs perfectly with mustard and bread.
Indulge in Sweet Treats from the Bazaar’s “Pikarnia” (Bakery)
No Ukrainian feast would be complete without a selection of delectable baked goods, and the Bazaar’s “pikarnia” (bakery) promises to satisfy every sweet tooth. Many of the baked goods featured in the Bazaar’s “pikarnia” are made by volunteers from the community who bake at home or small groups who gather in the church hall’s professional kitchen to bake larger batches of paskas and babkas. Every homemade pastry, torte, or other baked good is crafted with care and attention to detail, ensuring that every bite reflects the warmth and tradition of Ukrainian hospitality.
Here’s what you’ll find at the St. Mary’s pikarnia:
- Paska (Easter Bread): A traditional, slightly sweet Ukrainian bread, often braided and topped with intricate designs, symbolic of Easter.
- Babka (Sweet Bread): A bread that is richer and sweeter than paska, made with eggs, butter, and raisins, and baked to a golden perfection.
- Decadent Tortes: Rich and layered, these cakes offer a perfect balance of sweetness and texture.
- Many more delicious pastries perfect for sharing with family and friends.

In addition to the mouthwatering food, the Bazaar will feature a variety of vendors offering items for sale, including Ukrainian art, crafts, apparel, and more. Here’s a glimpse of what you can expect to discover:
- Pysanky (Ukrainian Easter Eggs): Exquisite, hand-decorated eggs created using the traditional wax-resist method, where intricate patterns and symbolic motifs are carefully applied in layers of vibrant colors. Each pysanka is not only a work of art but also a reflection of Ukrainian heritage, carrying blessings of health, prosperity, and protection. A Highlight of the Weekend: Tour St. Mary’s Church
One of the highlights of the weekend festivities will be the opportunity to tour St. Mary’s Ukrainian Catholic Church. Attendees can explore the stunning beauty and history that make this church a cornerstone of the Ukrainian community in North Port. The Easter Bazaar will include church tours and information will be available on Easter services and the blessing of traditional Easter food/baskets.
“When my husband Nestor and I moved to Southwest Florida eight years ago, we looked for a location that fulfilled our needs. One of these was to live not far from a Ukrainian Catholic Church and community. At St. Mary’s, we have found a community that gives us a true sense of belonging.”
When touring the church, visitors will be welcomed by Rev. Dmytro Kasiyan, the beloved Pastor of St. Mary’s Church. Inside, guests can admire the intricate iconostasis, a masterpiece of craftsmanship adorned with beautifully painted icons of saints and angels. The walls feature vibrant frescoes depicting sacred biblical scenes. The large chandelier that hangs in the center of the sanctuary adds a touch of grandeur, illuminating the space with warmth and reverence.
The exterior of the church is equally captivating, with elegant domes characteristic of traditional Ukrainian architecture, topped with crosses that gleam under the Florida sun. The symmetrical design and carefully constructed facade give St. Mary’s a distinct presence, standing as a beacon of faith and hope in the heart of North Port.

St. Mary’s Church is more than just a place of worship—it is part of the spiritual heart of the Ukrainian community in North Port. The parish welcomes both Ukrainian and non-Ukrainian attendees to its weekly liturgies, fostering a sense of inclusion and unity. The English Liturgy is held every Saturday at 4:00 PM, while the Ukrainian Liturgy takes place every Sunday at 10:00 AM, creating a space where cultures come together in harmony. Adding to the spiritual ambiance of the services at the Church is the St. Mary’s Choir, which enhances the liturgical experience with spiritual music.
