From the start of the full-scale invasion, whenever global leaders have raised the prospect of “peace” talks for Ukraine, we have raised a vital distinction: “peace” that is not a just peace is no peace at all. Anything less than justice risks leaving Ukraine vulnerable and rewarding aggression.

As talks continue regarding the end of the war, it’s more important than ever that we stand together for a just peace for Ukraine. Peace is not just about stopping the fighting now, but about ensuring a lasting and just peace—one that guarantees accountability, security, and sovereignty for future generations. Ukraine’s fight is not only about preserving its borders—it is about defending the values of freedom and justice for all who stand for them.

Earlier this year, in our spring article A Just Peace for Ukraine: The Test of Our Time, we underscored this very point. To reinforce the message, we also launched the “A Just Peace for Ukraine” Bonfire campaign—a way for people everywhere to show their support and amplify this call for justice alongside peace.

Today, on the eve of what promises to be historic talks in Washington, this call resounds louder than ever. Tomorrow, President Trump will meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and a united front of European leaders at the White House. At this critical crossroads, we must stand as a global community, amplifying the cry for “A Just Peace for Ukraine.” We ask you to share this message, share this post, and help ensure the world hears Ukraine’s voice.

The urgency of this moment cannot be overstated. Let’s take a brief look back at what has transpired leading to this critical crossroads.

A Red Carpet for a War Criminal

This past Friday, the world watched as U.S. President Trump met with the Russian president—an indicted war criminal—on U.S. soil. The reception, complete with a red carpet and a military flyover in Alaska, sparked understandable concern. The summit concluded without a ceasefire or any clear indication of a genuine interest in an end to the war and peace from the Russian president, or the makings of a viable peace “deal.” Instead, the optics of such a meeting, occurring while Ukraine endures relentless attacks, sent a chilling message to a nation fighting for its very existence. As many observers noted, the gathering handed Russia a significant public relations victory, weakening its international isolation while doing nothing to halt its aggression.

A Critical Crossroads for Ukraine’s Future

Tomorrow, the diplomatic spotlight shifts to Washington D.C., where President Trump is scheduled to meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, joined by a united front of European leaders. This collective presence underscores the deep concern among allies to ensure that Ukraine’s voice remains central in any discussions about its future—and to push for a resolution that respects Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. It is a crucial moment for peace that is built on a foundation of justice and enduring security.

Never Forget How This Began and The Human Toll

Let us never forget the origins of this brutal war. Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 was an unprovoked act of aggression, a flagrant violation of international law, and a direct assault on a sovereign nation. Russia’s motivations are transparent: to control Ukraine, seize its resources, and redraw the geopolitical map of Eastern Europe. This is not merely a regional dispute; it is a direct challenge to the principles of self-determination and to the international order that has maintained peace for decades.

The horrific outcomes of this war are not abstract. Thousands of Ukrainian soldiers and volunteers on the front lines have been killed or maimed, and civilians continue to be targeted in ways that shock the conscience. Beyond the physical destruction, Russia has carried out a systematic campaign to abduct Ukrainian children. Authorities have verified the identities of thousands of children who have been forcibly taken and deported to Russia. These children are not simply displaced; they are subjected to “re-education” and often placed for illegal adoption in Russian families, with their Ukrainian identities deliberately erased. This is a calculated assault on the next generation of Ukrainians—an attempt to sever family bonds and obliterate national identity.

Courage in the Face of Relentless Attacks

Despite the overwhelming odds, Ukraine has stood resilient. Its people—from soldiers on the front lines to civilians enduring daily bombardments—have demonstrated unparalleled courage and an unbreakable spirit. This resistance is a testament to their strength, as well as to the collective support of people around the world. Since Spotlight Ukraine was founded, we have shared the stories of the heroes on the front lines and the thousands of volunteers, aid workers, and everyday people who have risen to the challenge with unwavering solidarity. This global commitment has been instrumental in helping Ukraine stand firm.

The stakes for Ukraine’s sovereignty and peace have never been higher. This is not only a fight for Ukraine’s freedom; it is a fight for the very future of international security, for the belief that aggression cannot be rewarded, and for the principle that might does not make right. We must stand united against such aggression, unequivocally supporting Ukraine’s right to exist as a free, independent, and sovereign nation within its internationally recognized borders.
