Today’s blog continues our ‘Unsung Heroes’ series, focusing on the relentless efforts of those making a difference in Ukraine amidst the ongoing war. Photojournalist Allan Mestel embarks on his fourth journey to Ukraine since the full-scale invasion, capturing the untold stories of the people behind United Help Ukraine’s (UHU) impactful work. This entry highlights Allan’s visit to a facility supported by UHU’s Smuha Family Resilience Project, which is dedicated to aiding the most vulnerable victims of the war—children and their families.

The Smuha Project’s Impact on Ukrainian Lives

Allan Mestel and his interpreter, Stas, spent a day at a facility in Ukraine where the Smuha Family Resilience Project is making a profound positive impact on the youngest Ukrainians affected by the war. “Smuha,” which means path or lane in Ukrainian, represents the journey forward despite the challenges and obstacles. This project is a crucial part of UHU’s more extensive Mental Wellness Program, dedicated to helping children and their caregivers cope and heal from the trauma of war.

The Smuha project is not just a program; it’s a lifeline. It focuses on training mental health professionals, offering therapeutic activities for parents, supporting adolescent refugees, and creating safe spaces for young children.

Toy therapy is one of many activities and the facility. These efforts started back in 2022 with the Hibuki Therapy program, which uses guided toy therapy to help children recover emotionally from trauma. Over 5,000 Hibuki dolls have since been distributed to Ukrainian children experiencing psychological distress. Allan photographed children participating in toy therapy, both individually and in groups.

Art therapy is another healing method Smuha uses. Allan photographed adult women participating in art therapy. Allan remarked, “The women in the program shared similar sentiments, describing it as a safe space, a relief from their stresses, and a way to connect with others. Witnessing their childlike joy and focus on their art projects was beautiful, almost like rediscovering a lost innocence.”

Maryna Baydyuk, President of UHU, underscores the importance of their work: “It is vital to the health of Ukraine’s children and young people that they are not overlooked during this challenging time. We are proud to be at the forefront of efforts to care for the people representing such a crucial piece of our nation’s future.”

Heartfelt Conversations: Allan and Stas Reflect on Their Emotional Day

Allan and Stas observed various activities and individualized therapy sessions firsthand at the Smuha facility. After an emotional day documenting UHU’s activities, Allan and Stas found themselves in a nearby steakhouse, reflecting on their experiences. They talked about the families and children they had met and the dedication of the unsung heroes—the psychologists, volunteers, and other staff—working tirelessly to support them.

A Young Life Disrupted: Danilo’s Story

The day Allan spent at the facility was filled with poignant encounters, each profoundly impacting him. However, one child, Danilo, particularly stood out. Danilo is a four-and-a-half-year-old boy living through the horrors of war. His father, a soldier, is often away, leaving Danilo and his mother to face the brutal realities of war alone. The constant threat of violence has deeply affected Danilo, etching scars into his young mind.

Allan described Danilo’s behavior during their visit. “He was like a Super Ball,” Allan said. “Bouncing off the walls, unable to find peace. It was as if the trauma had infused him with relentless energy, a way to cope with the chaos around him.”

The war had stripped away Danilo’s childhood, replacing it with a perpetual state of hyperactivity and anxiety. Despite the immense challenges, Danilo’s progress is evident, thanks to the tireless efforts of the unsung heroes who have dedicated themselves to his recovery. These compassionate individuals provide the support and care Danilo needs to begin mending his shattered childhood. However, the road ahead will be difficult, and continued support will be crucial for his ongoing healing.

Allan noted the impact of the Smuha project on Danilo and others. “During our visit, I observed Danilo engaged in toy therapy, in his safe space. The focus and joy he exhibited were remarkable. This therapy, which has also benefited many other children, provides a crucial outlet for expressing emotions and finding peace amidst the chaos of war.”

The Importance of Telling Their Stories: Ukraine’s Youngest Victims

As Allan and Stas sat in the steakhouse, the weight of Danilo’s story pressed heavily upon them. They knew Danilo was not an isolated case. Across Ukraine, countless children endure similar experiences, marked by fear and instability.

“We need to keep sharing these stories,” Allan insisted. “People need to see the impact, to understand that their support is crucial.” Stas nodded. “Every bit of help can make a difference. For Danilo, for all the children like him.”

Their conversation was a solemn reminder of Allan’s mission and why he continues to return to Ukraine: the world must know the truth. On this day, Allan was there to be the voice for the children, to document their stories, and to urge the world to stand with Ukraine.  And to honor the Unsung Heroes making a world of difference.

As they finished their meal, they made a silent vow to continue their work, to shine a light on the innocent victims of this senseless war. The world needs to see, to understand, and to act.

Thanks to all the Unsung Heroes driving this crucial initiative forward and empowering Ukrainian families with the tools they need to heal and thrive in the future.
